Coal Ila 12

Caol Ila 12

Caol Ila | 12 year old | 43% | about 35€ in Germany |

Situation: From May 2015: I’m happily sitting in my study and I’m in the mood to drink and review; a bit tired. The review is a summary of older notes (earlier than May 2015) and new thoughts (May 2015) on the Caol Ila 12 though.

Nose: Ripe white grapes, followed by sweet notes like plum when they’re overripe and pulpy, I also get a grassy note which I also get with the Bunnahabhain 12; but everything is very light and decent; there’s also a hint of smoke and brine lingering in the background

Taste: Warm wet black earth, scorched wood, there’s also a nice vanilla/oak note, briny spiciness, licorice with maybe a hint of chocolate, smoke and peat.

Finish: A sturdy finish with a nice length, if there would be such a thing as medical-licorice this would be very accurate to describe the finish, wet damp earth.

Conclusion: A good Scotch to be…I dunno…a good scotch for many situations! Maybe most fitting if you’re not in the mood for all that in your face Islay profile? I just enjoyed it with Metallica’s “Black Album” followed by the The Decemberist’s “The King is dead”. Both worked nicely. But pretty much everything not too soft will do the trick. The Coal Ila 12 is very forgiving situation- and musicwise…I really should get another bottle soon (2019)!

Score: ★★★☆☆ Click here to find out what that means to me.
