Situation: (April 2016) We were doing some renovations over at our house hence we stayed at my mom’s place.
Information: This is the 25 year old BenRiach, it’s from their unpeated range and is a vatting of Bourbon, Virgin oak as well Sherry Casks.
Nose: Honeycomb, dark oak, thick sweetness, candied apples, saw dust, some farmy vegetal notes (Wife grabs the glass, stating that it doesn’t smell as bad as “the others”, says it smells like Vanilla ice, red wine plums and like Masala)
Taste: Thick mouthfeel strait from the start, caramel, some artificial or rather canned fruits like peaches, oak, peppery, tobacco. A bit waxy. This reminds me of something, but I can’t really put my finger on it. Damn. (Wife: oh gosh, burns, bäh! Not like masala or ice at all!)
Finish: Warm, honey, some white peppery bits, chocolate/nougat, drying and some nutmeg at the very end as well as a slight metallic aftertaste (w: that’s a disgusting aftertaste, gross…)
Conclusion: A nice sherried dram, some of the aspects reminded me of its peated brethren but not in the bigger notes but rather smaller aspects or nuances. While the palate comes across rather simple because of the dominating sweetness, the finish and the nose make up for that (not that they are overly complex though, but rather nice for me). Even though I like sweet drams from time to time, they’re not really my hunting ground and therefore I still struggle sometimes to give a graphic description and an appropriate score. The wood is very well integrated and makes up for the shortcoming on the palate.
